Documents for entrance to Agion Oros:

  • Priests should have a special permit from their principal.
  • The permission to the Greeks is free. However, they should first call the Pilgrim’s Office in Thessaloniki [+30 2310 252575] or Ouranoupolis [+30 23770 71421, 71450] to issue the Residence Permit ("diamonitirion"), which they can pick up at Ouranoupolis or Ierissos, before they get on the boat. There is an office at the port.
  • Pilgrims who arrange their reservations by phone should mail (not fax) a copy of their passport to the office, and call two weeks before the date of the visit to confirm the reservation.

The Mount Athos Office is open: from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 01:00 p.m. Generally, the office issues only 10 permits per day for non-orthodox pilgrims (foreigners) and 100 for Greeks and orthodox pilgrims. Because of the small number of permits our advice is to contact the office well in advance. These permits are valid for a 4day permit.
