Athens, the historical capital of Europe

Athens is the historical capital of Europe, with a long history, dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age. In the 5th Century BC (the “Golden Age of Pericles”) – the culmination of Athens’ long, fascinating history – the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. Over the years, a multitude of conquerors occupied Athens, and erected unique, splendid monuments. In 1834, it became the capital of the Modern Greek state and in two centuries since it has become an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm. You will visit the Parthenon, the Erechtheion with its famous caryatids, the Propylaea and the Wingless Temple of Nicky (on the Acropolis), which since 1987 have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Next you will visit the Acropolis Museum. You will see the temple of Olympus Zeus, the Odeon of Herodotus Atticus, on whose stage today various performances are presented, the white marble stadium where the first Olympic Games were held in 1896, as well as the buildings of the Parliament, the University of Athens and the Academy of Sciences. The museum is located by the southeastern slope of the Acropolis hill, on the ancient road that led up to the "sacred rock" in classical times. It’s sure that you will be surprised of the amazing ceremony of changing the honor guard at the monument to the Unknown Soldier. The tour ends with a walk through the beautiful area of "old" Athens - Plaka with a lot of souvenir shops, traditional taverns and cozy cafes.
